THREE LAUGHING MONKS,

三笑和尚,

Once upon a time, in ancient China there lived three old monks.

很久很久以前，在古代中国住着三个老和尚。

Their names are not remembered today,

他们的名字如今已不为人所知

simply because they never revealed them to anybody.

只是因为他们从未向任何人透露过。

In China they are simply known as the three laughing monks.

在中国，他们被称为三笑和尚。

They always traveled together and did nothing else but laugh.

他们总是一起旅行，除了笑什么也不做。

They entered a village or a town,

他们进入一个村庄或城镇，

stood in the center of it's main square and started laughing.

站在广场的中央，开始大笑。

Slowly but surely the people who lived and worked there and the passers by couldn't resist and had to start laughing as well,

慢慢地，在那里生活和工作的人们和路过的人都忍不住笑了起来，

until a small laughing crowd had formed and eventually the laughing had spread to the whole village or town.

直到一小群人笑了起来，最后笑声扩散到整个村庄或城镇。

That was the moment when the three old monks moved on to the next village.

就在那一刻，三个老和尚向下一个村庄走去。

Their laughter was their only prayer, all of their teaching, because they never spoke to anybody.

他们的笑声是他们唯一的祈祷和教导，因为他们从不和任何人说话。

They just created that situation.

他们只是创造了这种情况。

All over China they were loved and respected.

他们在全中国都受到爱戴和尊敬。

The people had never known such spiritual teachers before...or after.

人们以前从未见过这样的灵性导师……或之后

They seemed to communicate that life should be taken only as a great opportunity to laugh,

他们似乎在交流，生活应该是一个欢笑的好机会，

as if they had discovered some kind of cosmic joke.

就好像他们发现了某种无与伦比的快乐一样。

So they traveled and laughed for many years,

所以他们一起旅行，一起笑了很多年，

spreading joy and happiness throughout China,

把欢乐和幸福传遍整个中国，

until one day...

直到有一天……

while being at a particular village in the north province.

当我在北部省份的某个村庄时。

one of them died.

其中一个死了。

The people were shocked and came running from afar.

人们都惊呆了，从远处跑过来。

leaving the fields unattended for the day,

田野无人看管，

only to witness the other two monks' reaction to this dramatic event.

只想看到另外两个和尚对这一突然事件的反应。

They were expecting them to show sorrow or even cry,

他们认为他们要悲伤甚至哭泣，

and the whole village came to the place where the three monks were.

全村的人都来到三个和尚所在的地方。

Two alive and one dead.

两个活着，一个死了。

But the two remaining monks were laughing only harder.

但剩下的两个和尚笑得更厉害了。

They were laughing and laughing and could not seem to stop,

他们笑个不停，似乎停不下来，

so that a few of the good people who were assisting to this scene in disbelieve approached them and asked them why they weren't mourning at all for their deceased friend,

因此，一些好心人不相信这个场景并走近他们，问他们为什么不哀悼他们死去的朋友，

and for one time the monks actually responded:

和尚回答说:

"Because yesterday, on our way to your village,

“因为昨天，在我们去你们村子的路上，

he proposed a bet on who of us would beat the other two and die first,

他提议打个赌，看我们中谁会打败另外两个人，然后先死，

and now he won, the old rogue!

现在他赢了，这个老家伙!

He even had a testament prepared!”

他甚至还准备了遗嘱!”

A tradition required to wash the dead and change his clothes before putting him on the funeral pyre, but the old monk had explicitly asked to leave the old clothes on him,since he had never been filthy for one day. ”

按照传统，死者在火葬前必须为其清洗和更换衣服，但老和尚明确要求把旧衣服留在他身上，因为他从来没有一天不干净。”

"I never allowed any of the filth of this world to reach me through my laughter."

“我从不允许这个世界上的任何污秽通过我的笑声接触到我。”

His testament stated.

他的遗嘱.

So the old man's body was placed on the pyre with the garments he was wearing when he had arrived,

于是老人的尸体和他来的时候穿的衣服都被放在柴堆上，

and as the fire was lit and started licking on his clothes, to everyone's astonishment, suddenly fireworks of a hundred colours went exploding up and down and to all directions and finally the people who had gathered there also joined the laughter of the two wise man.

当火被点燃，引燃他的衣服，吃惊的一幕发生了，突然间，百种颜色的焰火在他的四面八方炸开，聚集在那里的人们也加入了两位智者的笑声中。
